Nurse Development and Internship Programs for New Nurses

At Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, we want to make the transition from graduate nurse to licensed practicing nurse as smooth as possible and to assist those nurses who have been away from an acute care environment.

The Nurse Development Program utilizes the expertise of nurse preceptors and the support of an educational advisor to develop and measure the progress that is made toward specific goals as the nurse advances from novice to intermediate skill levels. Each nurse's orientation is tailored to his or her specific needs.

The goals for the intern include:

  • Demonstrate understanding and competence in technical skills and procedures.
  • Apply sound judgment throughout the nursing process in the management of patient care.
  • Establish therapeutic rapport with patients and families and to foster collaborative relationships with coworkers, physicians, and ancillary department members.
  • Develop skills in the principles of nursing leadership, namely effective delegation and time management.
  • Develop a framework for integrated care of the patient throughout the health care continuum.
  • Successful orientation to the specialty nursing unit and shift requirements.
This program serves new Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and nurses returning to the acute care setting who have recently completed a Nurse Refresher course.

Typically, the Nurse Development Program lasts between 6 - 12 weeks. Specialty units may have extended orientation. Ultimately, release from the intern program is determined by successful accomplishment of all the program objectives.

Other Educational Opportunities Available
