Kenneth Hurwitz, MD: Recipient of SMH 2009 Physician of the Year Award
 SARASOTA MEMORIAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM – Local pulmonologist and critical care specialist Kenneth Hurwitz, MD, was named “2009 Physician of the Year” by Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s medical staff at their annual medical staff meeting Oct. 27.
Noted for his contributions to the hospital and community, Dr. Hurwitz was nominated by his peers – some 750 physicians who practice at the hospital – and selected by a committee of physician leaders. Criteria for the selection was based upon service to patients, service to Sarasota Memorial, service to fellow staff members, excellence in leadership and excellence in citizenship.
Dr. Hurwitz joined the medical staff in 2000. He currently serves as chairman of the hospital’s Special Care committee and a Critical Care Intensivist, managing the complex cases of patients in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, as well as patients who seek care for lung conditions at his physician group practice, Lung Associates of Sarasota. He was recognized by his peers for promoting new, life-saving protocols and advanced techniques in the ICU, including the use of induced hypothermia following cardiac arrest.
Dr. Hurwitz received his medical degree from the University of South Florida. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington DC. He is board-certified in Pulmonology, Critical Care and Internal Medicine. In addition to his busy medical practice, he serves on the faculty of the FSU College of Medicine, where he was a recipient of the college’s “Outstanding Community Faculty Educator – Sarasota Regional Campus” for 2008-2009. He is married and has four children.
