The Respiratory Care Services Department provides:
therapeutic and diagnostic use of medical gases and administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and humidifiers and aerosols;
administration of drugs and medications to the cardiopulmonary system;
invasive and non-invasive ventilator support and the management of life support systems
bronchopulmonary drainage by percussion, vibration and positioning;
rehabilitation and exercises
assistance with pulmonary and intra-aortic balloon catheter insertion and timing
bronchoscopy/tracheostomy assistance with specimen preparation
collection and analysis of arterial and venous blood
arterial line insertion and maintenance
pulmonary function and stress testing
physiologic monitoring
cardiopulmonary resuscitation including intubation
maintenance of natural airways including the insertion and maintenance of artificial airways
In general (non-critical care) and intensive (critical care) respiratory care intervention for all patient care areas within the hospital, both inpatient/outpatient, and via maternal or neonatal transport.
All services are provided using the professional practice model of assessment, plan, intervention and evaluation based on the (AARC) American Association of Respiratory Care’s Clinical Practice Guidelines. Findings are communicated in the patient record, to the physician and responsible nurse. The Respiratory Care Services Department, located on 4 Waldemere Tower, includes a Pulmonary Function Lab, a Pulmonary Stress Lab, the Hyperbaric Medicine Department, and a separate negative pressure procedure room for diagnostic and therapeutic inpatient and outpatient procedures. The Respiratory Care Bronchoscopy Suite is located in the Respiratory Care/Endoscopy, out-patients are admitted and discharged from the Endoscopy Area.
The Respiratory Care Services Department operates a comprehensive Pulmonary Rehabilitation program. The Program provides education, exercise conditioning breathing retraining; with emphasis on medication administration, nutrition, coping, and self-management skills to improve the quality of life of this community’s chronic pulmonary patients.
