Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Sarasota Memorial offers a comprehensive Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program to patients with chronic lung disease or who have had a recent lung surgery or injury. Through education and exercise techniques, pulmonary rehabilitation therapists can help enhance your qualify of life.
The best treatment for lung disease is active participation in staying health and strong. Pulmonary Rehabilitation provides individualized training and education to help build your confidence and maintain an active lifestyle.
Education and Conditioning
Among other things, therapists will teach you:
- Correct administration of medication
- Breathing retraining
- Bronchial hygiene
- Skills to conserve energy and simplify the activities of daily living
The exercise component emphasizes conditioning on lower extremity ergometers, treadmills and weight machines to help increase oxygen uptake and aerobic power. Arm pulley weights are also used to improve joint mobility and strength. When you are ready to continue your exercises at home, your exercise program will be individually designed to increase endurance and maintain flexibility and strength.
Program Admission
A physician referral is required for admission to Sarasota Memorial Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. If you do not have one, but are interested in the program, our program coordinator will contact your physician for a formal referral.
After a personal interview, your program will consist of three one-hour visits per week, for a period of time determined in your evaluation.
Insurance
Medicare covers 80 percent of the program costs if admission criteria are met. Secondary insurance generally will cover all or a portion of the 20 percent remaining costs, depending on individual plans. Our staff can help with your insurance questions.
