Cystoscopy with Contigen or Tegress Implant

Your physician has scheduled you for a Cystoscopy with Contigen or Tegress Implant. This is an outpatient procedure performed at The Continence Center, a department of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. You probably have many questions about this procedure. The following may help answer those questions.

What is a Cystoscopy with Contigen or Tegress Implant?
This is an outpatient procedure where the Urologist implants a paste-like collagen material into the area of the urinary sphincter via cystoscopy. This closes the sphincter thereby improving urinary incontinence symptoms. The Tegress Implant does not require a skin test.

Things to do prior to your appointment:
One month prior to your appointment, your physician will have administered a skin test to test for allergy to the Contigen Collagen. Please report any redness, hardness or swelling to your Urologist should it occur.

This procedure DOES NOT require that you fast prior to it. Feel free to eat and drink as normal. You may also empty your bladder as needed.

The procedure will take place at The Continence Center which is located on the 4th floor of the Waldemere Medical Plaza. The nurses will register you and prepare you for the procedure.

What can I expect during the procedure?
You will be asked to change into a gown and empty your bladder. The nurses will explain the procedure to you and ask for your informed consent. History questions including medications and previous surgeries will be asked.

You will be asked to lie on an examining table with your feet in stirrups. The nurse will prepare you for the procedure. This includes the passage of a xylocaine jelly into the urethra to desensitize it. Depending on the physician, xylocaine may also be injected around the urethra.

The physician will pass a small, lighted tube into the bladder to visualize the urinary sphincter. He will implant the collagen or tegress around this area, usually in several different places. The number of syringes of collagen or tegress used varies from individual to individual, but may be as many as six. You may feel some pressure as the collagen or tegress is implanted. The entire procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes.

What can I expect after the procedure?
After the procedure, you will be asked to empty your bladder. If you cannot, you will be asked to get dressed and remain on the unit (drinking water) until you are able to. In some instances, you are unable to urinate after the procedure. In that case, a small catheter is inserted and is removed in the urologist's office after 2 days.

You will be given a complete list of discharge instructions, which usually includes 2-3 days of an antibiotic. You will follow up with your physician in 2-3 weeks.

How many treatments will I need?

Many times one procedure is all that is needed. For those whose symptoms are improved, but not totally corrected, a second procedure may be scheduled in 6-8 weeks. There is no limit to the number of times this procedure may be done.
