What is an Ultrasound test?
Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test which shows soft tissue organs that do not contain air, gas, or bowel. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves. Unlike most imaging techniques we do not use radiation. Some of the organs Ultrasound can be used to look at are the liver, breast, kidneys, pelvic organs, and of course babies.
How do I get ready for my Ultrasound?
Your physician will give you information pertaining to your specific Ultrasound test. There are some organs we can image with no prep, to image some organs you will need to drink 32 ounces of water, and for other organs you will need to fast for 6-8 hours prior to your exam. Be sure that you know the preparation you need so that we are able to perform your exam in a timely fashion.
What can I expect during my Ultrasound?
A warm gel will be placed on the area we are imaging. We will then place a transducer (similiar to a microphone) on your skin and move it around to get the best images possible. Ultrasound exams do not hurt, you are not exposed to radiation, and there are no side effects after the procedure. You will be able to continue your normal routine after the exam.
Be sure you can trust the quality of your Ultrasound...
Not all technology is created equal. The quality of a diagnostic
test also depends on the expertise of the people who are doing the testing.
That's why it is important to know that the site you choose for a radiology
procedure is accredited. Accreditation by the American Institute of Ultrasound
in Medicine demonstrates a facility's clinical excellence and its commitment to
the highest quality patient care when providing diagnostic ultrasound service.
There are no state or federal laws overseeing the performance of diagnostic
ultrasound. AIUM accreditation, which is a voluntary process, gives patients the
assurance that a facility is qualified to perform their ultrasound examinations.
When your doctor orders an ultrasound, be sure and choose an accredited
ultrasound facility.
