A Rainbow of Care For Sick Children
What do you do when your child is sick and you need to go to work?
It's not an easy decision. This becomes a real problem when you are getting
ready for work and you discover your child is too ill to go to day care or
school. And for you, taking the day off at a moment's notice may not be
acceptable.Child Care Emergencies
Sarasota Memorial Hospital's Kids Under The Weather program is designed for
just those kinds of emergencies. Kids Under The Weather offers parents
knowledgeable, safe and comfortable care for mildly ill children.
Kids Under The
Weather is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, except on
holidays. Children from three months to 13 years of age can be cared for at Kids
Under The Weather. You must call for a reservation before your arrival to ensure
a place for your child.
Registration
Required
One-time registration is necessary for all families entering children into the
program. The information will be kept on file and updated as needed.
Immunizations
must be current and a copy of the immunization record must be presented at the
time of registration. The name of your child's physician/clinic must appear on
the registration form, as well as the name, address and phone number of at least
one other contact person.
Admission
Information
When bringing your child to Kids Under The Weather, please plan on providing the
following information:
- Your child's
principal symptoms
- When your
child last ate
- Medications
your child is taking and when the last dose was given
- How you can
be contacted during the day
- Who is
authorized to pick up your child
- What time you
will pick up your child
When picking up
your child from Kids Under The Weather, you will be given a daily report telling
you about your child's day, as well as a written record with the times
medications were administered during the day.
Parent
Agreement
Each family needs to sign a Parent Agreement form, which outlines parent
responsibilities. Forms are available at the Kids Under The Weather desk, or you
may request them by mail.
Payment
Sarasota Memorial employees may have their Kids Under The Weather fees payroll
deducted.
When picking
your child up, parents will be asked to sign a form certifying the services were
provided. Any parent portion of the fees (meals, for example) must be paid when
the child is picked up. An hourly fee will be charged to all non-SMH employees
and must be paid on the day of service. We accept cash, checks, Visa and Master
Card. Please note, there is an annual per family registration fee.
Meals
Lunch and snacks will be provided to your child. If you wish, you may assist
your child in selecting foods from a menu from the hospital dietary department.
Lunch is served 11:30 a.m.-noon. You should bring formula and baby food for
infants. All items should be labeled with the child's name. Gatorade, fruit,
crackers and popsicles will be available during the day. Please note on the
registration form if your child is allergic to any foods.
Medications
Medications, including over-the-counter products, will be administered to your
child only under the following conditions:
- The
prescription is clearly labeled from a pharmacy with drug name, amount to be
given and time to be given
- Prescribed
medications are current and registered to your child.
- A consent
form is signed to allow the Pediatric Clinician to administer the medication.
All medications
must be provided by the parents.
Please note all
allergies on the registration form. Remember that if you feel your child may
need Tylenol or cough medicine during the day, you must bring those with you
too.
Clothing
Children will remain in their own clothing. You should bring diapers and a
change of clothes for infants. All personal belongings should be marked with
your child's name. Each child will have a shelf to store personal belongings.
Daily
Activities
Each child's activities will vary according to their age and degree of health.
Toys for quiet play, books, crafts, games and TV will be available for your
child's use. Cots will be used for scheduled rest periods. If your school-aged
child has homework, it can be brought with the child and the child will be
assisted as needed.
Discipline
Guidelines
Discipline guidelines are required by the State of Florida Department of
Children and Families for use by the Kids Under The Weather staff. Copies of our
policy are available at the time of registration.
Specially
Trained Staff
Kids Under The Weather is staffed by experienced Pediatric Clinicians and Child Developement Specialists. The number of staff members depend on the number and ages of children
present, as well as the illnesses and conditions of the children.
Infection
Control
Children will be kept in separate rooms according to their symptoms. Play areas
are set up in each room and all toys are washable. There will be no group
activities combining children with different symptoms.
Urgent/Emergency Care
If the Pediatric Clinician feels that your child may need to be seen by a physician, you will
be called at work and asked to take your child to the doctor.
Your child will
not be permitted back into the Kids Under The Weather program until he or she
has been examined by a physician.
