Healthy Weight

A healthy weight is the weight your body naturally settles into when you consistently eat a nutritious diet, are physically active, and balance the calories you eat with the physical activity you do.

But weight is only one measure of your health. People who are thin, but don't exercise or eat nutritious foods aren't necessarily healthy just because they are thin. A person who is overweight according to body mass index (BMI) charts may be healthy if he or she eats a variety of healthy foods and exercises regularly.

How much you eat is not the only determinant of your weight. Your age, metabolism, genetics, and physical activity level also play an important role in your weight, health, and risk for disease. So it's important that you avoid comparing yourself to others and that you determine the lifestyle changes you need to make to maintain a healthy weight.

Finding Support

Bariatric Program Info Sharing │ Eating Healthy for Life │ Mind Over Matter │ Exercise Program

Many successful weight loss surgery patients say that their support network helped them immensely in maintaining their new healthy lifestyle changes. From family and friends to bariatric program support groups, there are many options available for people interested in weight loss surgery.

The first step in getting support is talking to your family and friends about weight loss surgery and that you are considering it. You might find that they are completely supportive or you might find that some family members and friends do not agree with your decision. Often, this is because your loved ones may have preconceived notions about weight loss surgery. Explaining the advantages, benefits and risks of the bariatric program will provide them with a better understanding of the lifestyle and health gains you can accomplish. Inviting them to attend an information session or support group with you is another option that can be helpful. Seeing and hearing the successes of others can make all the difference in perception.

Monthly Bariatric Support Group Meetings
In addition to surgery, Sarasota Memorial's support groups provide the long-term support needed to help patients make a comprehensive lifestyle change. You’ll hear about successes, frustrations, plateaus, and special moments, and have a chance to share your own experiences. You will develop relationships that can contribute to improved physical and emotional health.

The support group is free and open to the public the fourth Thursday of each month from 6-8:00 p.m.   Location: Sarasota Memorial Care Center at Blackburn Point, 929 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey. No registration is needed. Call the HealthLine at (941) 917-7777 for more information.
