Healthy Weight

A healthy weight is the weight your body naturally settles into when you consistently eat a nutritious diet, are physically active, and balance the calories you eat with the physical activity you do.

But weight is only one measure of your health. People who are thin, but don't exercise or eat nutritious foods aren't necessarily healthy just because they are thin. A person who is overweight according to body mass index (BMI) charts may be healthy if he or she eats a variety of healthy foods and exercises regularly.

How much you eat is not the only determinant of your weight. Your age, metabolism, genetics, and physical activity level also play an important role in your weight, health, and risk for disease. So it's important that you avoid comparing yourself to others and that you determine the lifestyle changes you need to make to maintain a healthy weight.

Choosing Bariatric Surgery at Sarasota Memorial

The goal of weight loss surgery is to live a better, healthier and longer life. But it is
major surgery, and the decision to have it should only be made after careful consideration and consultation with your family physician and one of Sarasota Memorial's specially trained and experienced Bariatric surgeons. They will answer your questions clearly and explain the exact details of the procedure, the extent of the recovery period and the reality of the follow-up care required. You will be required, as a part of our program, to have a Nutrition Assessment and a psychological evaluation to make sure that you have a clear understanding of the post-operative changes in behavior that are essential for long-term success.

It is important to remember that there are no ironclad guarantees and some of the challenges facing a person after weight loss surgery can be unexpected. To help you achieve your goals and deal with the changes surgery and weight loss can bring, Sarasota Memorial's Bariatric Program offers continuing care with follow up appointments, nutrition counseling, diabetes management and monthly support groups.

In the end, the decision to have the procedure is entirely yours and only you can decide if the benefits outweigh the potential risks. The Sarasota Memorial Bariatric Team is committed to providing support each step of the way, but the surgery is only a tool – long-term success depends on strict adherence to the recommended dietary, exercise and lifestyle changes. Because ultimately, weight loss surgery can only succeed if you make a lifelong commitment.
