Healthy Weight

A healthy weight is the weight your body naturally settles into when you consistently eat a nutritious diet, are physically active, and balance the calories you eat with the physical activity you do.

But weight is only one measure of your health. People who are thin, but don't exercise or eat nutritious foods aren't necessarily healthy just because they are thin. A person who is overweight according to body mass index (BMI) charts may be healthy if he or she eats a variety of healthy foods and exercises regularly.

How much you eat is not the only determinant of your weight. Your age, metabolism, genetics, and physical activity level also play an important role in your weight, health, and risk for disease. So it's important that you avoid comparing yourself to others and that you determine the lifestyle changes you need to make to maintain a healthy weight.

Welcome to Sarasota Memorial's Comprehensive Bariatric Program

Morbid obesity is a chronic disease, meaning that its symptoms build slowly over an extended period of time. An estimated 5-10 million Americans are considered morbidly obese.

Obesity becomes "morbid" when it reaches the point of significantly increasing the risk of one or more obesity-related health conditions or serious diseases (also known as co-morbidities) that can result either in significant physical disability or even death.

The Comprehensive Bariatric Program  at Sarasota Memorial Hospital is dedicated to the treatment & prevention of obesity and allied diseases. These treatments will include a comprehensive weight loss program, support group, diabetes management and surgical intervention including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and adjustable gastric banding, utilizing the Lap Band® and the Realize Adjustable Band®. These surgical procedures are the most effective treatments for morbid obesity currently available.

"There is such a freedom in being set free from the bondage of OBESITY!"

Allison's Success Story!

Weight loss surgery is growing in use to treat morbid obesity as a result of the following three factors:
  • Our current knowledge of the significant health risks of morbid obesity;
  • the relatively low risk and complications of the procedures versus not having surgery;
  • the ineffectiveness of current non-surgical approaches to produce sustained weight loss.

This site will provide valuable information about the benefits and risks of weight loss surgery. However, the best way to get a full assessment of your condition is to call 941-917-7777 and RSVP for our free information session to determine if weight loss surgery may be an option for you.

Sarasota Memorial is committed to a multi-disciplinary, compassionate approach to bariatric surgical care, providing patients with:
  • An extensive pre- and post-operative education including a nutritional assessment/counseling,

  • A 4-week comprehensive weight loss program called 'Eating Healthy for Life',

  • A psychological and pre-fitness assessment, post operative visits and monthly support groups.

You're long-term success is our goal. We're here for you every step of the way to help you achieve it!
