The Medical Executive Committee has approved a modified approach for
physician participation and the process for patient care in the
hospital during a hurricane.
Because we need your specialty present in the hospital during a
hurricane we are asking that you spend a few minutes and read this
information. Physicians will make daily rounds and dictate progress
notes on the hospitalized patients in their specialty. If you have
family, they may need to come with you. Please bring your own pillows,
towels and sheets or sleeping bags. Remember to bring any specialty
food items for children as well as books or small toys. Bring enough
clothes to last for several days as the roads may become impassable.
"A" TEAM (during the storm):
The following physicians will be asked to participate as "A" team
members and proceed to the physician command center when a hurricane
lockdown is called by the hospital:Specialists: who
are "on-call" for the Emergency Department that day/night or
"on-call" for their specialty group.
Hospitalists: two will be in house, one outside for relief
as "B" team. These numbers will increase once more hospitalists are
on staff.
"B" TEAM (after the storm-relief):
Rotations among physicians for primary care, if additional help is
necessary after the storm, will be established by the Chief of
Staff, Chief of Staff Elect and the Chief Medical Officer involving
rotations from each of the primary care offices.
Specialists: who are "on-call" for the emergency Department that
day/night or "on-call" for their specialty group.
Hospitalists: One or more, as designated for "B" team
relief.

3 - Dr. Hill, Health Dept. & Walk In On-Call
·
The physician on-call
for the group, should we go into hurricane Lockdown, should
come in
as a service to the community.
·
Provide group-call
calendars for each month.
They should be faxed to Sunny Olson at 917-7255.
·
Provide answering
service name & number.
·
Immediate family
members will be invited to come with the physician, no animals
allowed.
·
In most specialties
only one or two physicians will be needed. Due to the
unpredictability of vacations, the exact members from each group will
be requested at
the time of the hurricane evacuation, but a commitment
of the on call person for each
group will be requested.
WHEN
TO COME TO THE HOSPITAL:
The keys, low
lying mainland, and trailer parks will be evacuated when the Level I
Evacuation is issued by the County Disaster Center. We can expect
patients previously identified as high risk persons with special needs
and pregnant women to start arriving at that time. The hospital will
go on alert when this Evacuation is issued. A Lockdown may be
eminent, at which time the physicians will be asked to make plans to
come to the hospital before the roads are impassable. Stand by and
stay tuned via TV, Radio and Internet at
www.smh.com for updates.
The physicians' support to the hospital and the
community is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Physician
