George A. Bishopric, MD
Pioneer, visionary and an
outstanding figure in the history of medicine in Sarasota, Dr.
George A. Bishopric will long be remembered for his
contributions to medicine and the city of Sarasota.
Dr. Bishopric was Chief of
Medicine and Chief of Staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He
initiated Sarasota's nuclear medicine lab, and directed the
hospital's continuing education programs for physicians from
1954 until his retirement in 2000. The medical library was named
the Bishopric Medical Library in 1998.
Born Nov 3, 1926, in Leaksville,
North Carolina, Dr. George Bishopric received his medical degree
in 1949 from Duke University School of Medicine. He served as a
flight surgeon during the Korean War. He became a visiting
physician at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, and taught
medicine at Duke University Medical Center and the Vanderbilt
School of Medicine. He achieved the position of clinical
professor of medicine at the University of South Florida.
Dr. Bishopric was a founding
member of Save Our Bays, an organization that fought to
establish a public recreation area at the south end of Lido Key
in the 1960's. Bishopric served on the Ringling Museum Board of
Trustees from 1971 to 1981, initiating a significant collection
of modern paintings at the museum. He served as director of the
Century Club, a Rotary Fellow, and a member of the First United
Methodist Church.
Through Dr. Bishopric's testimony
as Marie Selby's personal physician, he was also instrumental in
the realization of the establishment of the Marie Selby
Botanical Garden at the site of her former home.
